New Music Update March 4th 2006
Heavy Rotation
Why? -- Rubber Traits
EP rom the non Hip-hop and more indie songwriter side of Anticon's Yoni Wolf (of CloudDead). Try 1, or 2 for good jams if you like CloudDead, Pavement, Mountain Goats etc. etc.
Eliot Lipp -- Tacoma Mocking Bird
Midtempo Electronic Instrumentals. Nice, and sort of funky beats. Play 1, 2, 4 or 8.
Caroline -- Murmers
Dreamy female fronted pop along the lines of Joanna Newsome or Air. Play 1, 3 or 8.
Young and Sexy -- Panic When You Find It
'Cute' like Mates of State, this Canadian husband and wife duo churns out low tempo pop tunes. Play 1, 3, 8, 2 or 10 if you enjoy Rilo Kiley, Viva Voce or Mates of State.
Chas. Mtn. -- Hugs
Lo-fi Folk Pop with lots of experimentation but nothing too 'weird' for the radio. If you follow Ariel Pink, Animal Collective, Castanets, or No Neck Blues Bnad then spin 4, 6, 7, 15 or 2 among others.
Terrestrial Tones -- Dead Drunk
Collaboration between members of Black Dice and Animal Collective creates dense and noisy soundscapes. Start with 2, 4, 6, 5 or 1.
Mogwai -- Mr. Beast
Post Rock superstars return with a few more vocals on this album and shorter track lengths. This album is less 'epic' than previous ones, but still maintains the mood and sound you expect from Mogwai. Fans of Godspeed! You Black Emporer or Saxon Shore should be sure to try 2, 9, 8 or 10.
Vaz -- The Lie that Matches the Furniture
Relatively 'accessible' noise-rock with de-emphasized lyrics, Former hammerhead members make a creepy album for fans of Hella, Guitar Wolf etc. Start with 6, 2, 1 or 10.
WolfMother -- Dimensions
StonerRock-ish that dips into other genres on occassion...nicely. Fans of The White Stripes should go with 3, 1, or 4.
Streetlight Manifesto -- Keasbey Nights
Buchmeyer prefaces this with saying he thinks Ska is stupid, because he's THAT damn indie! That being said...he can not deny that he loves Catch 22's 'Keasbey Nights'. This is a reworking of that album...Keasbey Nights 2 if you will... Try 2, 10, 9 or 4 if you like The Specials, Catch 22, Ska.
Two Gallants -- What the Toll Tells
Imagine Coner Oberst, Jeff Tweedy and William Elliott Whitmore on a month long bar crawl and then recording a twangy, brash alt. country indie rock record. A lot of the best tracks are rather long but go with 1, 2, 8, 6 or 7 if you have a thing for Johnny Cash, Billy Bragg, Wilco or Bright Eyes 'I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" album.
Irving -- Death In the Garden, Blood On the Flowers
California Indie-Pop with elements of Elephant6 twee and british shoegazer throughout. Comparissons range from Starlight Mints, Ulyssess, Shins, or From Bubblegum to Sky, to Dios Malos, The Cure of Interpol. Start with 8, 7, 3, 5 or 2 and go from there.
The Light Footwork -- One State, Two State
Beulah approved pop band with a sweet sound but not sweet enough to call them twee. Play 3, 6, 1 or 2 if you enjoy Beulah, Apples in Stereo, The Unicorns....
B. Fleischmann -- The Humbucking Coil
Epic electronic pop tunes with a low tempo and gorgeous sound for fans of Styrofoam, On AM Radio, Electric President. Try 6, 2, 7 or 1.
